10 Days in Japan for First-Time Visitors

Ten days is the first-time sweet spot: enough time for Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and one reset without turning every transfer into a race. This route keeps the classic highlights but adds breathing room where seven-day trips usually break.

Trip highlights

  • Tokyo split into east and west days
  • Hakone as an onsen and mountain reset
  • Kyoto, Nara, and Osaka without daily hotel churn

Day-by-day outline

  1. Day 1

    Arrive in Tokyo

Settle near a major station and keep the first evening light.

  2. Day 2

    Asakusa, Ueno, and east Tokyo

Use one side of the city for temples, museums, old streets, and an easier dinner.

  3. Day 3

    Shibuya, Harajuku, and Shinjuku

Group the west-side icons into one day and save a night view for after dark.

  4. Day 4

    Tokyo flex day

Use this for Disney, teamLab, shopping, or a neighborhood that matches your interests.

  5. Day 5

    Hakone overnight

Forward luggage if useful, ride toward Hakone, and prioritize onsen time over checklist speed.

  6. Day 6

    Hakone to Kyoto

Finish the Hakone loop if weather allows, then travel to Kyoto for a simple evening.

  7. Day 7

    Kyoto east side

Focus on Higashiyama, Kiyomizu-dera, Gion, and one slower tea or cafe stop.

  8. Day 8

    Arashiyama or Fushimi Inari

Pick one early-start highlight, then avoid overloading the afternoon.

  9. Day 9

    Nara and Osaka

Day-trip to Nara, then shift into Osaka for Dotonbori and an easier final base.

  10. Day 10

    Departure or final Osaka morning

Use the last morning for Kuromon, Umeda, airport transfer, or one final food stop.
