By Yiyan · Last reviewed: March 2026

Japan is visa-free for travellers from over 60 countries — but the rules differ by nationality. This guide covers entry requirements for Malaysia, Singapore, the US, the UK, and Australia, plus what to prepare before you land and how to use Visit Japan Web to speed through immigration.

Verify with official sources before travel. Visa rules change. Always confirm your nationality's requirements at the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs website before booking flights. This guide is for general reference only.

Quick answer: am I visa-free?

🇲🇾 Malaysia — visa-free, 15 days  ·  🇸🇬 Singapore — visa-free, 90 days  ·  🇺🇸 United States — visa-free, 90 days  ·  🇬🇧 United Kingdom — visa-free, 90 days  ·  🇦🇺 Australia — visa-free, 90 days

Holding a visa-free passport doesn't remove all entry requirements. Read the per-country details below — officers can still deny entry if you don't have the right documents.

What to prepare before you fly

Having these ready before boarding avoids stress at immigration. Cross-reference with the full Japan trip checklist for a complete pre-departure rundown.

📱

eSIM or pocket Wi-Fi

Japan has excellent mobile coverage. Set up an eSIM before you land, or pick up a pocket Wi-Fi at the airport. You'll need internet to show Visit Japan Web QR codes and navigate.

💴

Cash in yen

Japan is still heavily cash-dependent. Withdraw ¥30,000–50,000 on arrival from a 7-Eleven ATM (open 24/7, accepts foreign cards). Don't rely on cards alone.

Accommodation confirmation

Print or screenshot your hotel confirmation. Immigration officers sometimes ask for it. Having your first-night address ready avoids delays at the counter.

🎫

Return or onward ticket

A booked return or connecting flight is the most commonly cited entry requirement across all nationalities. Have it accessible on your phone.

🚇

IC card (Suica or Pasmo)

Load a Suica on Apple Wallet before you board — no physical card needed. It works on trains, buses, and convenience stores from the moment you land.

Visit Japan Web — the digital immigration card

Visit Japan Web is Japan's official pre-registration system. Register your passport and flight details in advance to receive a QR code that speeds up immigration and customs. It is free and not mandatory, but it saves significant time at busy airports.

What Visit Japan Web covers

  • Immigration card: replaces the paper disembarkation card you would otherwise fill in on the plane. Your details are pre-filled from your registration.
  • Customs declaration: submit your customs declaration digitally and show a QR code on landing instead of filling out paper forms.
  • Fast-track lanes: at Narita, Haneda, Kansai, and other major airports, registered travellers can use dedicated QR code lanes that are typically faster than standard queues.

How to register

  1. Visit the Visit Japan Web portal (vjw-lp.digital.go.jp) — use the official .go.jp government domain only
  2. Create an account with your email address
  3. Enter your passport details, travel dates, and flight information
  4. Submit your registration at least 3 days before departure (earlier is fine)
  5. Save or screenshot your QR codes for immigration and customs

Tip: Register your full trip before departure, not at the airport. Airport Wi-Fi can be slow and you don't want to scramble while in the immigration queue.

Do not overstay

Overstaying your visa-free period is a serious offence. Consequences include detention, deportation at your own cost, and a ban from re-entering Japan (often 5 years or more). Japan tracks all entry and exit records. If your stay is approaching the limit, either depart or visit a Regional Immigration Services Bureau well before your permitted date expires.

Frequently asked questions

How long can Malaysians stay in Japan without a visa?
Malaysian passport holders can stay visa-free for up to 15 days. This is one of the shorter allowances — many travellers mistakenly assume 90 days. An extension to 30 days may be possible at an immigration office but is not guaranteed. Always check the latest rules at the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.
Can I extend my stay in Japan?
Sometimes. Applications are made at a Regional Immigration Services Bureau inside Japan. For Malaysian nationals on a 15-day stamp, an extension to 30 days is occasionally granted. For most other nationalities on a 90-day stamp, extensions are rarely approved for tourism. Do not overstay — the consequences include deportation and a ban from re-entering Japan.
Do I need travel insurance to enter Japan?
Travel insurance is not a formal entry requirement for most visa-free nationalities. However, Japanese healthcare is excellent but expensive for foreigners. A policy with at least USD 100,000 medical cover is strongly recommended. Some travellers' comprehensive policies include Japan coverage by default — check yours.
What is Visit Japan Web and do I need to register?
Visit Japan Web is Japan's official digital pre-registration system for immigration and customs. You enter your passport and flight details in advance to receive a QR code that speeds up border processing. Registration is free and not mandatory, but it reduces queuing time significantly at major airports like Narita and Haneda.
What happens if my passport is expiring soon?
Japan requires your passport to be valid for the duration of your stay only — there is no strict 6-month-beyond rule. However, renewing before travel is wise anyway, as airlines and transit countries may have their own rules. If you're connecting through any country with a 6-month validity requirement, that country's rules apply.
Do I need to show proof of funds at Japanese immigration?
Officially, US, Australian, and some other passport holders may be asked for proof of sufficient funds. In practice this is rare, but you should be prepared: a bank statement, credit card with adequate limit, or cash on hand. A rough guideline is ¥10,000–15,000 per day of your intended stay. Hotel confirmation and a return ticket reduce the chance of being asked.
